The power of social and professional connection for change.

Health services are undergoing an incredibly powerful test of what can be done, when change is the only option.

If we go back to 2019 and imagine the response of a senior leader when asked about the need for simple changes in the workflow of healthcare professionals, we can guarantee that even as a senior and receptive leader, committees would be formed to explore the implications of HR, legal and IT, having after weeks or months a dense report on all the reasons why this could not be done.

With the arrival of the pandemic, in a matter of days, health services discovered that changing was not an option, but a necessity for the continuity of the service. This was a powerful warning for people to remember how the need for joint work is necessary for things to work quickly.

The health improvement process is a social process and this should be the focus to be worked on. Working with other people, having the support of leaders in discussing problems, creating a learning platform and mutual responsibility among peers, can be a great driver for generating energy and enthusiasm.

The future of work is now.

We found that we no longer need to say phrases like "you can do it" to motivate people. We can bring motivation through joint action, creating a collaborative environment and providing instant feedback. This conveys confidence and assurance that they can move on.

The status quo is the enemy of change. The challenge for all healthcare organizations is to get professionals to recognize that the status quo no longer exists. The transformation is not a single event, but an ongoing process, requiring constant reminders for everyone to focus on finding a new path.
